but.ter.fly (but' er-fli') n. 1. A swimming stroke requiring (in theory) super human strength and extraordinary coordination, but characterized (in actuality) by randomly placed arm movements and erratic breathing patterns. Performance of this stroke is usually accompanied by incessant yelling on the part of the coach, sheer hysteria on the part of the parent, and near drowning on the part of the swimmer.
Butterflyers or butterfliers are basically a different breed of swimmer. You would know if you are one of the few who love the feeling of a butterfly set!
We are a rare breed, but a proud one.
You know you're a butterflyer when:
1. You can do a set of 400's butterfly without breaking stroke
2. When you're often mistaken for a wrestler or gymnast because of your broad upper body
3. You know that staying underwater for the full 15 meters is the best way to swim any distance of fast fly
4. You've adopted side-breathing, or have experimented with it
5. You'd rather do a set of 200 or 300 flys instead of a distance free set
6. If you're short, you flat out suck at free and back, but breast is your 2nd best stroke
7. You're the strongest out of all the swimmers when it comes to dryland work (this is disputable, as breastsrokers are pretty damn strong too)
8. You own, or have owned a mono-fin
9. Lady butterflyers: You hate your huge upper body and wish you were better at backstroke or freestyle
10. You have severe shoulder problems
11. Even with shoulder problems, you're still fast
12. Your fly times just as fast--if not faster--than your free times
13. You kill everybody, even backstrokers in underwater kick
14. Old school flyers: your triceps, rear deltoids, and back are ripped to shreds
15. New school flyers: your quads, ass, and abs are ripped to shreds
16. You have really flexible shoulders, even though they're huge
17. You're so flexible that you can do a butterfly stretch all the way around your head
18. You slack off on a set after a fly group set
19. You know how to do a warm down set doing butterfly. And the other swimmers think you're crazy b/c they think "easy fly" is impossible
20. You have neck like bulldog.
21. Soreness in the shoulders and triceps doesn't exist anymore
22. You can talk about, and go through the motion of moving your hips in a "pelvic thrust" without laughing about it
23. You've been in a cheesy competition where you swam 200 fly, and you were the only one in the heat...or in the whole race!
24. You know you're a Butterflyer when you always have to wait FOREVER for the relay guy in front of you, with his painfully slow and clunky Breaststroke.
25. You know you're a butterflyer when you always manage to get (and sometimes lose) an insane early lead in the IM.
26. you know you're a butterflyer when you're always the most exhausted after a choice set
27. You know your a female flyer when your arms are the same size as some of the guys!
28. you know your a butterflyer when you can do the hundred fly, turn around and swim a 500 free in competition.
29. You know you're a flyer when you get excited for backward 400 IMs...cuz you're the only one who can sprint the last 100
30. You know you're a butterflyer when nobody wants to swim behind you in practice because they'll swallow your ridiculously huge waves
31. You know you're a flyer when you've sprained your finger/wrist at least once because you hit somebody else's hand while swimming fly (our hands are moving at the highest velocity out of all other strokes)
